There was an exciting buzz on Monday morning at the Ramolao Makhene Theatre at Market Square with the opening of the 25th Zwakala Festival. Groups from across Gauteng were gearing up to showcase their talent to win the prestigious honour of having a full season at the Market Theatre. The theme for this year’s Festival is ‘from community to artistic excellence.’
The Festival has continuously managed to attract emerging young writers and young artists who incorporate and embrace different art forms in their work. The groups have proven that theatre is alive and young people are using it as a vehicle to communicate their messages to diverse audiences.
Forbidden Knowledge written and directed by Katleho Sekhosana & Simphiwe Ntshingila kicked off the festival programme with an abstract piece set to promote thought on debilitating social issues. The production speaks to freeing the mind from the chains of reality.
The production was followed by Dikapapa, a political thriller depicting a life of a struggle stalwart and traitor now participating in South Africa’s democracy where a traitor is heralded as a hero.
The Zwakala Festival presents brand-new productions. The Festival combining pathos, satire and humor represent a huge voice of what South African youth are grappling with in their communities. The productions certainly raise questions and tantalize the curiosity.
The Zwakala Festival is currently playing until Saturday 04 November 2017. A full programme is available on the Market Theatre Foundation’s website www.markettheatre.co.za . Bookings can be made on Webtickets at www.webtickets.co.za
